Kiln Cure
With many parts on automobile engines, motorcycles, snow mobiles, ATV they never
reach temperatures to fully cure the Ceramic Coatings.
Examples:
1) Motorcycle mufflers. The cure temperatures for Satin Black is around 700 degrees
Fahrenheit. Unless they are fully cured in our kilns they may never become fully cured on
your bike. The curing cycle will continue on your engine and the Satin Black will become
fully cured after several heating intervals if the part in question ever reaches a full
cure temperature. Simple parts like mounting flanges, muffler clamps often get the ceramic
coating washed off after continued cleaning routines.
2) Heat shields coated with Satin Black on motorcycle exhaust pipes seldom become fully
cured unless they are cured at around 700 degrees. It's just pointless to coat them unless
they're fully pre-cured before you install them. Items like Porsche heater boxes
absolutely require the700 + degree kiln cure since the outer shells never reach a full
cure temperature. Low temperature powder coating ovens just don't cut the mustard in many
situations.
3) Accessory items like automotive water necks, iron intake manifolds do not get fully
cured without an oven cure.
4) Aluminum parts like intake manifolds are cured at temperatures of 400 to 500 degrees so
that the Aluminum doesn't soften or anneal in the curing process.
5) Aluminum parts like cylinder heads, pistons, forged rods and other engine parts are
cured at only 300 to 400 degrees.
6) Automobile headers normally have heavy mounting flanges and often additional brackets.
Without a full cure in the 700 degree range the flanges and other mounting surfaces often
never get cured completely.
7) The kiln curing process on mild steel tube and stainless headers start the stress
relieving process that helps the headers last longer and eliminate cracking at the welds.
What does fully cured really mean?
After headers or mufflers are fully cured the ceramic coatings become impervious to attack
by solvents and oils often found in internal combustion engine applications.
This means that you won't be damaging the headers with your greasy hands when you install
them. They'll survive some oil drips, grease smudges that always come during
installations.
After curing you can spray /wipe your ceramic coated mufflers down with Gunk Engine
cleaner to clean them. Prior to the full curing the ceramic coating can be removed with
simple solvents like gasoline, brake fluid, carburetor cleaner and engine cleaning
solvents.
Sending your parts to a Powder Coating Company
that cures at only
450 degrees could produce questionable results.

90% of the parts we process can be kiln cured through our medium sized curing kiln.
The
smaller size kiln allows for quick turn over of
orders. We're not waiting 10 hours for a walk in Powder Coating oven
to pre heat and we're not waiting several hours to get to the completed
cured parts. |

Items like Porsche heater boxes absolutely require the kiln cure since the outer shells never reach a full cure temperature mounted on the cars. |

Vetterman recommends that their custom aircraft exhaust NOT be wrapped.
Ceramic coating provides the constant even temperatures on the extremely
thin tubing and prevents cracking at the welds caused by uneven heat and vibration.

Our digitally controlled curing ovens are accurate and safe for
curing expensive parts that could be damaged by run-away heat.

In many cases your parts require a full burn off of
residual oil
residues that were applied to enhance shelf life of the parts.
Burn off temperatures can vary depending on the part and
the type / amount of the paint / shellac / oil / paraffin that
is on the part. Without this burn off it is often very difficult to get ceramic
materials applied properly.

The accuracy of our curing is within +5 -5 degrees.
That's very important on your expensive pistons, cylinder heads and other precision
aluminum parts sent to up for coating applications. |
